Areas of Practice

I have built a busy practice across the range of the common law, with the exception of crime, and enjoy a well-deserved reputation for my knowledge and expertise in each area. I appear regularly in the County Court as well as in the High Court and Employment Tribunals, and have been involved in cases up to and including the Supreme Court. I am regularly instructed at Appellate level and have enjoyed notable success particularly in the Employment Appeal Tribunal. I have extensive and wide-ranging experience particularly in the areas of:

Financial Remedies (previously known as Ancillary Relief);

I am Head of the Chambers Family Group. I have experience in acting for clients at all levels of court, from the County Court to the Supreme Court, and am regularly instructed in complex cases with high asset values or where there are company structures. However I am equally at home advising on cases with limited assets, and am prepared to consider fixed fees at competitive rates for such work.

Employment

I have heavy experience of Employment work and has appeared regularly in the Employment Appeals Tribunal, as well as in the Court of Appeal. I have been involved in a number of appeals which have amended or clarified the law, and many of my reported cases are cited in leading practitioner works. I also write extensively on employment law. I have dealt with cases of unfair and constructive unfair dismissal, wage and holiday pay claims; all forms of discrimination, and, memorably, for 20 truck drivers, who I established were employees rather than self-employed. I act for both employer and employee.

Housing and Landlord and Tenant

I deal with disputes arising out of residential and commercial tenancies and have lectured widely on the effects of the Superstrike decision. I have experience of the public, private and commercial sectors and have regularly been instructed in multi-day trials. I also have significant experience of leasehold enfranchisement and service charge disputes.

Insolvency

I have a niche insolvency practice, having undertaken a Masters degree in corporate insolvency work.

Private law children

I regularly act in private law children cases, including applications for leave to remove from the jurisdiction and child abduction cases. As Head of the Chambers Family Group, I am acutely aware of the effect that the cuts in public funding have had on access to expertise and am prepared to consider appropriate fixed fees in cases where funding is an issue.

Property and Commercial

I am also the Secretary to the Chambers Civil Group. I have wide-ranging expertise in contractual and commercial disputes, issues relating to real property, trespass, nuisance, civil and commercial leases and disputes involving the Land Registry. I am regularly instructed to advise and act on complex commercial cases.

Trusts of Land and co-ownership disputes

I act regularly in TLATA disputes (disputes over the ownership of properties, usually were parties who are not married are separating) and have a reputation for an unrivalled knowledge of the law. I have lectured widely on the various developments in the law of co-ownership in recent years and my Masters degree also included the study of advanced trusts and equity. I have a particular interest in secret and half-secret trusts.

Wills and Probate

I have acted in contentious probate and disputes over wills, including allegations of lack of capacity, undue influence and want of knowledge and approval. I was recently instructed in a High Court action arising out of a contested will. I have also been instructed on numerous occasions in respect of mediations arising out of disputes over wills. I also have a particular interest in secret and half-secret trusts.

General civil litigation

I have experience and accept instructions in other areas of work, notably Personal Injury and Professional Negligence. I also have an academic and professional interest in cases arising out of the Protection from Harassment Act 1997.

I also have an extensive paper practice covering pleadings and advice on all areas of the law and am able if necessary to provide oral or written advice at short notice.

I have also gained significant experience of mediation and alternative dispute resolution and am regularly instructed at an early stage in proceedings for my ability to assist in negotiated settlements or at round table or mediation meetings.

Before coming to the Bar, I spent a year working as an AO in the litigation department of the Treasury Solicitor where I gained experience of numerous cases involving the Home Office.

I have gained a reputation for diligence, hard work and an ability quickly to identify the important aspects of a case. I am approachable and available for advice both formally and informally and am known fearlessly to promote the interests of my
